Career Time Management Steps Critical For Making That
Career Jump

  • Give yourself 3 Hours a week "unplugged", "heads down" no distractions focused on job search activities. Break it up in 3-one hour increments but whatever that time is it is meant for NOTHING ELSE but job search activities.
  • Schedule it on your calendar and your families' calendar so they know this is your time you are unavailable. This is no different then if you have a doctor appointment or anything else.
  • Take 30 minutes in the beginning of each week to make a plan of what you want to accomplish during these time frames so that when it comes to the session you know exactly what you want to accomplish during that time so you DON'T WASTE THE TIME.
  • Last Here is a Sample 3-Hour Job Search Plan to Follow
  • Research the type of Job you want to do and what the main functions and skills needed for it. Once you find the options you like make a list of what similar and transferrable skills you have to do that.
  • Research the Titles of people hiring for those roles along with some profiles so you can understand who your audience is better.
  • Create an email template to connect with those people on Social Media (Linkedin), and then personalize it so you can start sending those communications to create the networking opportunities.
  • Curate or create some content to post on LI or other Social Media platforms that is around your area of expertise so you get the attention of other professionals as someone who has authority in their space.

TOP TIPS BEFORE JOB-HOPPING

  • As an applicant, be the first to explain your motives. You have nothing to hide, and having a good, clear reason for your next move can prevent any doubt from rising in the recruiter’s mind.
  • Be ready to share the positive results with your prospective employer, and the impact you may have had on the team that you have previously worked with.
  • Sometimes it isn’t clear to an employer whether an applicant is job-hopping or just had contracted, seasonal or temporary jobs while the market is uncertain. Make it clear to avoid unnecessary rejections.
  • Do your research thoroughly before jumping. Make sure that you know exactly what you’re looking for in your next role and assess whether now is definitely the right time for you to start working towards that.
  • Talk to your managers and tell them that you’re looking for a change. Understanding the direction that you would like to take your career in and how that can happen might change your perspective on an imminent move. Either that or confirming that you were right to move on in the first place.

Networking Tip That Will Actually Get You a Response

When reaching out to someone especially online make sure your are concise, polite and to the point with why you want to connect with them. Too many people make the mistake of leading with a generic question: “I see that you work at XYZ and I’d love to know more about your role.”  That is a cop out message that people really don't appreciate and more than likely won't respond back to you. People will respect you more if you preface how you know them or connected to them then proceed to move right into your ask of them. Everybody knows on Social Media platforms that people reach out for a specific reason. If you get right to the point and its something they think they can help you with, people will usually respond back.
